Day-to-Day: 6-Day Climbing Kilimanjaro Tour | Machame Route
Day 1: Moshi - Machame Gate to Machame Camp
Machame Gate (1,800m) to Machame Camp (3,000m)
Your journey begins with a scenic drive to the Machame Gate for registration. You will then set off on a 5–7 hour trek through the dense, lush montane rainforest. This zone is rich in biodiversity; keep a sharp eye out for exotic birds and black-and-white colobus monkeys overhead. The trail can be muddy, but the vibrant flora and towering trees provide a breathtaking introduction to the mountain.
Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira Camp
Machame Camp (3,000m) to Shira Camp(3,840m)
Leaving the forest behind, the path becomes steeper as you ascend into the moorland zone. You will cross a little valley and walk along a rocky ridge covered with heather until you reach the edge of the vast Shira Plateau. From this high-altitude plain, you’ll enjoy sweeping views of Kibo Peak and, on clear days, a stunning sunset over Mount Meru in the distance.
Day 3: Shira Camp - Lava Tower to Barranco Camp
Shira Camp(3,840m) to Lava Tower(4,630m) to Barranco Camp(3,960m)
This is a vital day for acclimatization using the "climb high, sleep low" principle. You will hike east into a semi-desert landscape toward the Lava Tower, a 300-foot volcanic formation also known as the "Shark’s Tooth". After lunch at this high point, you descend into the beautiful Barranco Valley, surrounded by unique giant senecios and lobelia plants.
Day 4: Barranco Camp to Barafu Camp
Day 4: Barranco Camp(3,960m) to Barafu Camp(4,673m)
Your day starts with an exhilarating scramble up the famous Barranco Wall. While it looks daunting, it is a non-technical climb that offers incredible panoramic views of the glaciers. You will then traverse the Karanga Valley before the final ascent to Barafu Camp, your base for the summit attempt. Spend the afternoon resting and hydrating, as you will prepare for a midnight start.
Day 5: Barafu Camp - Uhuru Peak - Mweka Camp
Summit Day! Barafu Camp(4,673m) to Uhuru Peak(5,895m) to Mweka Camp(3,100m)
Beginning around midnight, you will trek through heavy scree toward Stella Point on the crater rim. This is the most challenging stage, but reaching the summit at Uhuru Peak by sunrise—standing at the highest point in Africa—is a life-changing triumph. After celebrating, you will begin a long descent back to Barafu for a quick rest before continuing down to Mweka Camp for your final night.
Day 6: Mweka Camp - Mweka Gate - Moshi Town(End)
Mweka Camp(3,100m) to Mweka Gate(1,640m)
On your final day, you will enjoy a gentle 3–4 hour descent back through the rainforest to the Mweka Gate. Here, you will sign the park register and receive your official gold summit certificate for reaching Uhuru Peak. A vehicle will then be waiting to transfer you back to your hotel for a well-earned shower and celebration.
To ensure your success on the 6-day Machame route, proper acclimatization is your greatest ally. We prioritize the "climb high, sleep low" method, allowing your body to adjust to thinning oxygen levels naturally as you traverse the mountain's varied altitudes. Beyond physical preparation, the most critical factor for a safe ascent is your cooperation with our professional team; it is vital to follow your lead guide's instructions at all times, as their expertise in monitoring "pole pole" (slow) pacing and health vitals is what makes the difference between a turn-back and a triumphant summit. By staying hydrated, maintaining a positive mindset, and trusting the seasoned experts at Kilimanjaro Climbing Radar, you turn a grueling trek into a safe, life-changing achievement at the roof of Africa.
